All Hallows Eve
Halloween.
Pumpkins. Scary movies. Candy galore.
Whoever decided to pair the scary movie culture with the candy culture was a genius. This year, the candy industry is estimated to bring in $9.1 billion of revenues during the Halloween season. Sugaaaa, sugaaaa! And apparently you used to have to dance to get your treat. This should still be a thing (burn off all those calories).
Since I'm more of a sugar fan than a scary movie fan, I stick to my Halloween classics: Disney's Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. Talking black cats have a special place in my heart. Thus, the inspiration for my pumpkin carving this year.
Let's think about this. Every year, millions of American PURCHASE PUMPKINS...to carve them. Into some sort of clever (or scary) picture - lit up by a candle. Some sort of fancy veggie decoration. TBH, I'll I could think about whilst carving my pumpkin was..."...is this what the "pre" pumpkin spice latte looks like?"
How did pumpkin carving originate, you ask? Well. Lemme tell you. It has something to do with Ireland. And carving turnips. And warding off evil spirits. That's the gist. Decorate your house AND ward off those evil spirits? Sign. Me. Up.
Carving pumpkins is a truly wonderful tradition, because it's a testamente to human creativity. So keep on carving. Sit on your porch passing out candy (or apples, whatever suits your fancy). And ward off those evil spirits with your turnips. Happy Halloween!
