Top Things to Do in Lexington, Kentucky: Horses, History, and Hidden Gems

Lexington, Kentucky, often referred to as the "Horse Capital of the World," is an incredible blend of Southern charm, rich history, and vibrant culture. With picturesque rolling hills, thoroughbred horses, and the perfect mix of local eateries and craft breweries and, of course, BOURBON, it's an ideal destination for both relaxation and adventure. Lexington locals (my brother and sister-in-law, John & Kelley) have shared their insider recommendations for the best spots to eat, drink, catch a game, and explore the iconic Bourbon Trail. Kelley grew up in Lexington and knows Lexington better than the back of her hand. When they host family in town, the schedule it typically packed with good eats and fun events.

George and I are headed up to Lexington for the Auburn vs Kentucky game to visit with family and cheer on the Tigers. Traveling within the SEC for sporting events is a great way to explore the local city culture. So, of course, we wanted to make sure that if you’re a traveling sports fan, you’d have all of the local recommendations.

1. Betting on Ponies at Keeneland

A visit to Lexington wouldn’t be complete without a day at Keeneland, one of the most renowned thoroughbred racecourses in the world. Whether you’re a seasoned racegoer or a first-timer, the energy at Keeneland is truly unmatched. George and I are excited to place our bets (wish me luck!) and soak in the stunning views of the track, the beautiful horses, and, of course, the thrill of the races.

Pro tip: Even if you're not into betting, Keeneland’s grounds are beautiful for a fall stroll, and the Keeneland Gift Shop is worth checking out for unique equestrian-themed finds.

2. Visit the Kentucky Horse Park

If you’re a horse lover, the Kentucky Horse Park is another must-see. This working horse farm offers everything from museums dedicated to horse history to live demonstrations and horse-drawn trolley rides. It’s a great family-friendly option, perfect for all ages to experience Lexington’s deep connection to the equestrian world.

3. Tour the Bourbon Trail

No trip to Kentucky is complete without indulging in the state’s signature drink—bourbon! Lexington sits on the famous Bourbon Trail, making it easy to hop between distilleries. Favorites like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace are a short drive away, offering tours that explain the history and craft behind Kentucky bourbon, plus tastings that allow you to sip and savor the state’s finest spirits. 4. Explore Downtown Lexington

Lexington’s downtown is a great place to wander, offering a mix of historic sites, art galleries, boutique shops, and local eateries. Start your day with breakfast at Doodle’s, a local favorite with a farm-to-table focus, before heading out to explore. Don’t miss Gratz Park for a peaceful walk or Hopemont, The Hunt-Morgan House, a beautiful historic home that tells the story of Lexington's early days.

5. Catch a Game at Rupp Arena & Kroger Field

For sports enthusiasts, Lexington is home to the University of Kentucky Wildcats, and there’s no better way to experience the city’s passion for basketball than catching a game at Rupp Arena. The energy is electric, and it’s a great way to experience Lexington’s vibrant college sports culture. And, if you’re a visiting SEC football fan, Kroger Field would be a must visit.

6. Relax at McConnell Springs

Tucked away in the city is McConnell Springs, a hidden gem and a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. This 26-acre park features walking trails, historic springs, and lush greenery, making it an excellent spot for a relaxing afternoon away from the city buzz.

The food scene in Lexington is vibrant, and there are so many local spots worth checking out. If you’re a BBQ lover, Red State BBQ is a must for its smoked meats and casual atmosphere. For something a bit more upscale, Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse offers an indulgent dining experience with an incredible menu of steaks, seafood, and craft cocktails.

George and I are planning to sample as much as we can during our trip (especially with his family’s insider recommendations!), and we’ll be sure to make room for Crank & Boom ice cream after dinner—it’s legendary.

10. Shop at The Summit at Fritz Farm

Whether you’re in the mood to shop or just browse, The Summit at Fritz Farm is a beautifully designed shopping and dining destination. You can find everything from boutiques to restaurants, all in a walkable open-air space. It’s a great spot to pick up a few souvenirs or simply enjoy a leisurely afternoon with a cup of coffee in hand. I have dropped some $$$ here.

  • Wallace Station Deli and Bakery
    For a laid-back lunch, take a drive Old Frankfort Pike (Rte. 1681) from Versailles Road to Alexandria Drive and stopping Wallace Station is a must. The drive itself is gorgeous - you’ll be whizzing by horse farms underneath the shady trees. Situated along a historic Kentucky highway, this casual walk-up deli serves up hearty sandwiches and delicious baked goods. You’ll love the relaxed atmosphere and the rich local history. The Nunnelley fam frequents this establishment.

  • The Local Taco Lexington
    Brunch or lunch, you can’t go wrong here! Be sure to try the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla—it’s Kelley’s favorite. The Local Taco combines Southern comfort with a twist of Tex-Mex flair, making it an ideal spot for a casual, tasty meal.

  • Bella Cafe and Grille at Chevy Chase
    This cozy spot in the Chevy Chase neighborhood is perfect for brunch or dinner. It’s known for both its fantastic cocktails and food that never disappoints. Due to its smaller size, make sure to reserve a table in advance for an intimate dining experience.

  • Josie’s Restaurant
    Locals swear by Josie’s for the best breakfast in town. While they don’t take reservations, the wait is worth it for their famous cheese grits and hearty Southern breakfast dishes. Get there early to beat the crowd!

  • Minglewood
    Creative menu, fun cocktails and an energetic atmosphere. For a meal that’s sure to impress, Minglewood offers a creative menu that will be sure to impress the pickiest of eaters. George and I love this spot.

    A new addition to Lexington’s vibrant scene, Lost Palm is a rooftop bar located atop the Manchester Hotel. With a stylish “White Lotus” vibe, it’s the perfect spot to sip cocktails and enjoy appetizers with an unbeatable view. Remember, this place is 21 and up, making it a great choice for a sophisticated evening out.

    A local chain and beloved sports bar, Drake’s is a go-to for game days. Whether you're catching a college game or an NFL matchup, you’ll find the perfect spot to watch and enjoy some pub-style food and drinks.

No trip to Lexington would be complete without a stop on the Bourbon Trail. Kentucky is home to some of the world’s finest bourbon distilleries, and Lexington’s surrounding area boasts some incredible spots to sip, learn, and enjoy the craftsmanship of this iconic spirit.

  • Castle & Key Distillery
    Just a short drive from Lexington, Castle & Key is a must-see distillery that offers a unique blend of history and modern innovation. Housed in a beautifully restored castle, the grounds are as stunning as the spirits are delicious. Enjoy a tour and tasting, and be sure to stroll through their meticulously designed gardens for a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle. We visited Castle & Key with Kelley and John and loved it!

  • Barrel House Distillery

    Barrel House is located IN historic Lexington, right around the corner from Goodfellas Pizzaria! If you’re in town for a quick trip and don’t have a car, this spot would be a fab choice if you’re looking to taste some bourbon.

  • James E Pepper Distillery

    James E Pepper is also located close to Goodfellas Pizzaria! This distillery was recently restored to its original glory (the Pepper family brand of whiskey dates back to the American Revolution). Bonus: the bourbon bottles are GORGEOUS.

  • Woodford Reserve Distillery
    Woodford Reserve is one of the most well-known bourbon brands, and their distillery, located in nearby Versailles, Kentucky, is a picturesque stop along the Bourbon Trail. Take a tour of their historic grounds, learn about the bourbon-making process, and sip on a tasting flight of their world-class spirits.

  • Buffalo Trace Distillery
    Head to Frankfort, just outside of Lexington, to visit Buffalo Trace, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in America. Known for producing some of the finest bourbons in the world, including their sought-after Pappy Van Winkle, Buffalo Trace offers free tours and tastings that give you an in-depth look at the bourbon-making process.

  • Four Roses Distillery
    This beautiful distillery in Lawrenceburg offers a more intimate bourbon experience, with Spanish mission-style architecture and a variety of guided tours. Known for their smooth, complex bourbons, Four Roses is a great spot to learn about the art of bourbon blending and enjoy some unique pours.
