Auburn-Opelika Summer Bucket List
Auburn-Opelika Summer Bucket List
Summertime. When the livin’ is easy. Or, at least, when the childhood nostalgia for the slow summer days hits us working individuals harder than the Texas sun on tennis court pavement. I love summer for all of the nostalgia it carries with it, for the long summer days, for inspiring us to spend more time outside, and for encouraging a healthy appetite for ice-cream. These are a few of my Auburn-Opelika Summer Bucket List items.
1. Food Truck Friday in Downtown Opelika. George and I LOVE Food Truck Fridays in downtown Opelika. Two blocks in downtown are reserved for food trucks, shops stay open late, you can enjoy live music and the crowd is usually poppin’!
2. Picnic at Red Barn. Picnic baskets, charcuterie and bocce ball? I’m in.
3. Drink a vanilla-flavored Toomer's Lemonade on Samford Lawn. Don’t sleep on the vanilla flavor. It’s delicious.
4. Watch a sunset from the Laurel Hotel rooftop with a cocktail (or mocktail!) in hand. Auburn glitters after the sun goes down. It’s beautiful!
5. Listen to live music on the patio of Botanic. The tiki torches, lush landscaping and access to a patio bar makes you feel like you’re on vacation.
6. Bake a peach cobbler with some local peaches. Peaches are in season from late May-June and nothing is more southern than peach cobbler and sweet tea during the summer.
7. Play pickleball at the Opelika Sportsplex. Pickleball is one of America’s favorite sports and the fandom has exploded. The Opelika Sportsplex has 24 covered pickleball courts, so you can play in the shade!
8. Cheers on the Corner in Downtown Auburn. George and I have been AVID “Cheers on the Corner” attendees for five years running. Local restaurants pair with local boutiques to pass out light bites and adult beverages , encouraging locals to shop downtown! It takes place every July and is almost a local’s last “hoorah” before students come back to Auburn.
9. Eat an ice-cream sandwich while poolside. And try not to drip liquid cream & sugar on yourself. And/or visit O-Town ice-cream for some homemade creamy goodness!
10. Paint a watercolor landscape of Chewacala Park. Reconnect with your artistic side and nature at the same time! Summer is all about enjoying the outdoors and what better way to experience it?
11. Saturday morning yoga session on the rooftop of the Laurel Hotel. And you can be your bottom dollar I will be getting a smoothie from Hey Day Market after sweating in my Shavasana pose.
And, if you’re looking to explore the area a little further outside of Lee County, I have a blog post on the best day-trips from Auburn-Opelika. Happy summer!
