7 Unexpected Destinations on My 2023 Travel Bucket List

It is tradition to post a travel bucket list destination list at the beginning of each year on Living & Local. Instead of doing new year’s resolutions, I dream about all the places I want to go. Perhaps a tad backwards but I love a good daydream.

I’m a bit late to the party, but my goal was to get this 2023 travel destination bucket list out in the Q1 of this year. I’ll be cutting is close, but BY GOLLY this list is a fun one. The list itself is focused on the southeast, because this region of the United States is becoming more and more my bread and butter. Exploring all of the small towns and vibrant cities (semi) close to home brings me joy! Check out my Travel Guides for further joyous illustration.

You might recognize a few of these destinations … and you might not. I wanted to go for more “off the radar” spots to share the travel love and encourage travelers to explore new places. Many of my Auburn friends grew up in the area and therefore have lots of local knowledge revolving around weekend trip destinations. They graciously let me pick their brains to compile a list!

Seven southern destinations on my travel bucket list for 2023

  1. The Barnsley Resort. Located in north Georgia and seemingly in the middle of nowhere, this luxury resort is a true southern escape. George and I actually visited the Barnsley in February and LOVED our stay. Once we parked the car on Friday, we didn’t touch the keys again until checkout, which is a small luxury on its own. A few features we loved: the campfire pits surrounded by adirondack chairs and complimentary s’mores kits in the evenings, bourbon tastings on the weekends, bikes to explore the property, hammocks for lounging, walking trails and beautiful grounds.

  2. Saint Augustine, Florida. Saint Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the United States after being founded by the Spanish is 1565. In fact, on of the most popular tourist destinations is a 17th Century fort, Castillo de San Marcos. And, as you can imagine, the architecture is unique for the United States as it was heavily influenced by Spanish culture. My best friend, Carla, and I are planning to celebrate our 30th birthdays here! We’ve already planned every detail. Stay tuned for our itinerary!

  3. Kiawah Island, South Carolina. You probably recognize the name Kiawah for hosting some of the PGA Championships (of which they have five). The most famous course is the Ocean Course. Located just 25 miles south of Charleston, Kiawah Island looks to be one of those picturesque beach towns complete with sandy beaches, luxury golf experiences and wildlife-rich marshes.

  4. Highlands, North Carolina. George and I made the trip to Highlands last July and have been talking about going back ever since. Highlands is a charming mountain town that consistently makes Southern Living’s “Cutest Small Towns in America” lists in addition to holding a steady spot on Conde Nast Travel’s luxe accommodations lists for resorts like Old Edwards Inn. A destination for the outdoor enthusiast, art-lover, foodie and luxe traveler. Read more on Highlands HERE.

  5. Smoky Mountain National Park. This has been on my bucket list since I moved to Auburn over five years ago, and I STILL haven’t crossed it off of my list. And so … it remains.

  6. Cape San Blas, FL. Located just south of Panama City, Cape San Blas is a hidden gem known for its pristine white-sand beaches, clear waters, and abundant wildlife. Perhaps think 30A but 30 years ago? Visitors can fish, swim, or kayak in the bay, or explore the many hiking trails and nature preserves in the area. If you’re tired of the crowds in 30A, Cape San Blas might be a fun new alternative.

  7. Greyfield Inn // Cumberland Island National Park. Located on Georgia's Cumberland Island, the Greyfield Inn is a historic mansion turned luxury inn known for its elegant and antique accommodations, world-class cuisine, and stunning natural beauty. It’s truly a “getaway” as guests have to hop on a ferry to the National Park in order to access the Inn! Part of the Inn’s lure is escaping the hustle & bustle and spending time in nature. Guests can explore the island's pristine beaches, hike through its forests, or take a guided tour of its historic ruins. This is a long-shot, luxe bucket list destination for me, but a gal can dream!

From historic cities to stunning natural landscapes, the South has a lot to offer for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and culture. What more could you want out of a southern destination bucket list?
