Hye From Texas

Hye, TX. Blink town (if you blink, you'll miss it). Find it where the speed limit drops to 55 MPH for a short period of time and you'll pass a Post Office + a couple of signs advertising for whisky and wine. Hye is about 20 miles from Fredericksburg and, for me, marks the beginning of the 290 Wine Trail coming in from Austin.

But. Try not to blink. You'll want to make a stop in this tiny town. The main building in Hye is the Post Office/Market. My family used to send Christmas cards from this Post Office, because they stamp, "Hye from Texas!" on your letters! (Cute, right?!? Yeah - my parents are kewl).

A couple of my good gal pals braved the Hurricane Harvey weather to meet me in Fredericksburg for a weekend reunion. Thankfully, the weather in central Texas turned out to be rather tame compared to other areas. We shopped Main Street Saturday morning, and then decided to take our weekend adventure to Hye. We made a {rainy} DAY out of it!

If you've got the lunch munchies (I usually get mine around 10:30 AM and YES I eat breakfast), I would highly suggest eating at Hye Market. Everything is incredibly fresh (featuring local products) and their menu has a solid selection of sandwiches and salads. I chowed down on their "Whatever" sandwich - complete with peach butter chipotle sauce + focaccia bread - basically inhaling it. Let me repeat. PEACH. BUTTER. CHIPOTLE. SAUCE. And, although I didn't indulge, my friends shared a lemon bar created by lemon bar pastry chef angels.

One of my favorite wineries also happens to fall in the Hye zip-code. Williams + Chris Winery (across the street from Hye Market). They source 100% Texas grapes to make their wines. If you want to go for a tasting, you'll need to make a reservation. Otherwise, you can share a bottle under their covered pavilion! The girls and I shared a bottle of the Enchanté. It's 73% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Verdot. Definitely a great rainy day wine choice. And we must give some thanks to Hurricane Harvey for helping aerate our wine #windy

Our next adventure to Hye will have to include a tour of the Garrison Brothers' Property. It's the "first and oldest legal whisky distillery in Texas." Tasting Texas History? Sign. Me. Up.

And even though we spent the majority of our weekend peeking out from underneath the hoods of our rain jackets, I'd rate our weekend as HYE-ly successful.
