Southern Charm in Opelika, Alabama :: The Historic Heritage House
The term “exploring” has taken on a new meaning these days. Adventuring in your own backyard has become something of an art, a discovery process that launches you into small world circumstances. George and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the beautiful and historic Heritage House. We’ve been driving + walking past this B&B for years now without a clue as to what treasures were inside.
In an effort to explore our backyard and indulge in a small staycation, we decided to spend an evening at Heritage House. And, in our opinion, it is THE best place to stay in the Auburn-Opelika area. The old historic home was constructed in 1913 as a primary residence for the Davis family (an old Opelika name). After several generations of pass downs, sales, and restorations, the Heritage House has finally reopened to serve travelers near and far as a luxury B&B experience.
Husband and wife duo, Leif and Dani, are the proprietors of this gorgeous 5-bedroom property, acquiring it in early 2020. Leif is calm and collected - exactly who you’d want to help you arrange a perfect stay. Dani (the chef!) was a visionary with the interiors and she speaks to all of her guests like they’re longtime friends. The couple managed to capture the history of the home and the culture of the Deep South with their decor. Not one detail was overlooked! From plush sitting areas to gilded gold frames to quirky knick-knacks, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time (only with modern ammenities WiFi and smart TVs).
The service was spectacular. We were warmly greeted upon check-in and shown around the grounds (common areas with extra wine glasses and sparkling waters, sun room filled with books and a slew of yard games). Then, Leif slid us a slip of paper filled with breakfast menu items we could choose for the morning! George and I just about lost our jaws to the floor, we picked out an apple parfait, breakfast flatbread with pesto/sun dried tomatoes/eggs, and homemade biscuits. And yes, it was just as delicious as it sounds.
George and I stayed in the Garden Suite, which has a lovely quarter canopy bed, sitting area, and claw foot tub. Each bedroom has a specific subtle theme, ranging from the ocean vibe of the Seaside room to a celebration of Alabama recreation in the Clubhouse. AND you can order the “Romatic Retreat” package for your room (CELEBRATE!) and the “DIY In-Room Spa for Two” package to help you rest + relax. We are now huge fans of sipping champagne and sitting in face masks.
There is something truly lovely in the boutique B&B experience. The owners are friendly and make you feel welcome in the magnificent mansion, the antique furniture adds so much character, and the slow pace of life is delightful. Full service B&Bs are rare and a true gem once you find one you love. So whether you are traveling from afar or just wanting to plan a “staycation”, Heritage House is calling your name.
