Tips for Packing a Carry-On

CARRY ON || LEATHER JACKET || CONVERSE

My preferred way to travel: carry-on luggage. Two summers ago, I packed for a WEEK in Hawaii only using a carry-on and my backpack. Thank goodness I did, because I had two layovers and LAX probably has one of the most complex terminal layouts in the US. No way checked luggage would have made my connection.

Honestly, there’s a mean sense of satisfaction I get when passing the mile-long line of people trying to check their 50 pound bags while I head straight for TSA. Plus, I experience way less travel anxiety when I know I can breeze through security with all of my gear (especially when I’m making a shorter connection). If I can squeeze all of my belongings into one bag, I’ll try my best. So, after numerous trips with my all time favorite Mark and Graham Carry-On Spinner, I’ve come up with some rules to live by.

  1. Neutrals are your best friend. They go with everything and it’s harder for people to tell if you’ve worn that black long sleeve top before vs. that hot pink sweater. I usually pack one pair of pants (wear a pair on the plane) and multiple tops. And, I usually wear my pink leather jacket on the plane and it pairs perfectly with blacks, grays and whites.

  2. Packing Cubes. I prided myself on being a very organized packer before I ever purchased packing cubes. BOY, did my life CHANGE. I think they’re critical to organizing different sections of your carry-on, especially if you have multiple stops on a trip or if you’re packing for different dress codes. When I travel for work, I keep my professional wear in one packing cube and everyday wear in another. Plus, if needed, you can open your luggage in a public place without all of your unmentionables falling to the floor.

  3. Consider layers. My favorite black swing dress makes it into my suitcase EVERY time, because it’s one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. I can wear as a dress, with an off-the-shoulder top, with a t-shirt knotted at the waistline or as a bathing suit cover-up. BOOM.

  4. Make smart use of your space. Consolidate make-up bags and an overnight kit. Stuff your socks into your shoes. Roll your clothing so everything lines up nicely. Re-think your sky-high heels if you’re only planning to wear them once. I only packed two pairs of shoes for Portugal (and we were traveling for nine days)!

  5. Accessories. “But Hope - how do I get my wardrobe to pop if I’m only packing neutrals?!” I hear ya. Accessories are your POP. Colorful earrings, necklaces, bracelets take up WAY less space than an item of clothing. Plus, you could probably get away with packing 2 pairs/day.

And ya esta! Those are my biggest pieces of carry-on packing knowledge. If you are checking a bag and packing a carry-on for a longer trip, be sure to pack an extra change of clothing and a pair of socks just in case of a travel mishap! Been there. Done that. Do you prefer to travel via carry-on or are you a tried and true checked luggage kind of person?
