Top Fredericksburg Activities that Don't Involve Drinking Wine
Not a wine-o? Not a problem. Here at L&L, we love our wines; however, we do recognize that not everyone is a fan of fermented grape juice. With the Texas wine scene exploding in the Hill Country, it can be hard to find activities that don’t revolve around visiting tasting rooms or wineries. Not to worry! L&L to the rescue.
Hike Enchanted Rock
We’ve mentioned this one before, but it’s really such a highlight for any visit to Fredericksburg. The largest concentration of granite can be found about 20 minutes from Fredericksburg’s city center at The Enchanted Rock State Park. Bring a large water bottle and a hat. The hike up is quick, but steep. You’ll get your steps in and the view will be WORTH it.
Visit the Museums
The National Museum of Pacific War sits right off of Main Street and is an incredible tribute to WWII history. Your ticket will give you access to the museum for 2 days, and the extra time will definitely be necessary. The newly updated interactive experiences will keep you engaged for hours as you stroll through a somber moment of history. Be sure to check out the Japanese Peace Garden (especially beautiful in the springtime). The Pioneer Museum is located on West Main Street and gives tribute to the early Fredericksburg settler days. Transport yourself back in time and take a stroll through some Fredericksburg history.
Stroll Marktplatz and Take a Peek in the Public Library
Marktplatz is Fredericksburg's center and where all of the festivals are hosted year after year! Take a stroll through the grounds and enjoy the park (picnics are welcome)! Check out the Fredericksburg landmark, the Vereins Kirche. An old school house and town meeting hall has been converted into a local museum! Admission is free, donations accepted. Then, take a peek inside the Fredericksburg Public Library! Built in 1882, the architecture is sure to impress.
Shop
You can shop until you drop on Main Street. The local business owners have a little something for everybody. One can find clothing stores, cowboy boots, antiques, home décor, fine jewelry, knick knacks, hand-crafted furniture, cook-ware, instruments and hand-carved candles. CHA-CHING.
Take a Cooking Class
Das Peach House is a family-owned specialty foods store just a couple of miles from Main Street. Home to the local favorite brand, Fischer & Wieser. There, you can sample all sorts of jams, jellies, sauces, salsas and herb blends. Sign up to take a cooking class with a local chef and enjoy the tastes of the Texas Hill Country.
Eat German Food
Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 by German settlers. The city name and culture continues to carry on the German influence throughout the years. Experience some cultural fusion and try the food! Sample some sausage and sauerkraut with pumpernickel bread during your visit. There are a number of German food options on Main Street – personal favorites include Auslander, Altdorf and Rathskeller.
Spa
There are a number of spas in the Texas Hill Country. What better way to relax on the weekends than with a massage? The Fredericksburg Herb Farm offers some great spa packages (I will personally attest) and they’ve been known to serve complimentary mimosas. Grab brunch on the way out at their restaurant!
